The Problem
Why Mold Is a Year-Round Problem on the Treasure Coast
Florida’s heat and humidity are the perfect environment for mold. Combine that with hurricane season, slab-on-grade construction, and aging HVAC systems pulling humid air through leaky ductwork, and you get a near-perfect breeding ground. You can clean visible mold all day long — if you don’t fix the source, it comes back.
- Indoor humidity above 60% — typical for under-sized or short-cycling AC systems
- Hidden plumbing or roof leaks, especially after a tropical storm
- Improperly sealed return air ducts pulling humid attic air into the home
- Standing condensation around AC handlers, drain pans, or evaporator coils
- Closed-up vacation properties between visits
The Sharkey Air Difference
HVAC-Rooted Mold Remediation in Stuart, FL
Most mold remediation companies show up, spray a few things, run a fan, and leave. We’re an HVAC company first. We look at your home as a system — air handler, ductwork, insulation, moisture levels — and we treat the cause, not just the symptom. One team, one phone number, one accountable contractor for the whole job.
- Full air quality and moisture assessment of the affected area and adjacent spaces
- HVAC system inspection — coils, drain pans, ductwork, and humidity controls
- Containment and HEPA filtration to prevent cross-contamination
- Safe removal and disposal of porous materials (drywall, carpet, insulation)
- Antimicrobial treatment of surfaces and structural elements
- Air scrubbing with HEPA-filtered negative air machines
- Post-remediation verification to confirm the air is clean before we leave
- HVAC corrections to prevent the same conditions from coming back
The Sharkey Air Process
Our 5-Step Residential Mold Remediation Process
A clear, predictable process from inspection to clearance — with the HVAC corrections most remediation companies skip.
Free On-Site Inspection
A Sharkey Air technician identifies visible and suspected mold, measures humidity and moisture, and pinpoints the source. You get a written scope of work and transparent pricing.
Containment & Air Control
We seal off affected areas with 6-mil poly, set up negative air pressure, and run HEPA air scrubbers to keep spores from spreading to clean parts of the home.
Removal & Cleaning
Non-salvageable porous materials are removed and bagged. Salvageable surfaces are HEPA-vacuumed, scrubbed, and treated with EPA-registered antimicrobial agents.
HVAC Source Correction
The step most companies skip. We service the equipment, clean affected ductwork, address humidity control, and recommend system changes to prevent recurrence.
Verification & Sign-Off
We re-test air quality and surfaces before declaring the job complete. You get documentation suitable for insurance claims and real estate disclosures.
Residential Mold Remediation — FAQs
How much does mold remediation cost in Florida?
Most residential mold remediation projects on the Treasure Coast fall between $1,500 and $6,000, depending on the size of the affected area, the materials involved, and whether HVAC system work is required. Sharkey Air provides flat-rate written estimates after a free on-site inspection — no hidden fees or “discoveries” mid-job.
Does homeowners insurance cover mold remediation?
Sometimes. Most Florida homeowners policies cover mold remediation when the underlying cause is a “covered peril” — a sudden plumbing failure, storm damage, or AC overflow, for example. Long-term leaks, deferred maintenance, and flood damage are usually excluded. We provide documentation that supports your claim and can coordinate directly with your adjuster.
How long does mold remediation take?
Most residential jobs take 2 to 5 days from containment to clearance. Larger projects, or jobs that require structural drying and HVAC corrections, can run a week or more. We give you a realistic timeline before any work begins.
Can I stay in my home during mold remediation?
In most cases, yes — if the affected area can be fully sealed off and you have access to unaffected living and sleeping spaces. For larger projects or sensitive occupants (infants, elderly, immunocompromised), we generally recommend temporarily relocating. We give you a straight answer based on your specific situation.
Do you need a license for mold remediation in Florida?
Yes. Florida law requires mold remediators and mold assessors to be separately licensed by the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). Always verify a contractor’s license before signing. Sharkey Air is fully licensed and transparent about which credentials apply to your job.
What’s the difference between mold remediation and mold removal?
“Mold removal” is the layman’s term. Technically, no contractor can remove every spore from your home — mold spores exist naturally in all indoor air. Mold remediation is the proper term for returning indoor mold to normal background levels and eliminating the moisture source that caused the problem. That’s what Sharkey Air does.
How do I know if I have black mold?
You don’t, until it’s tested. “Black mold” usually refers to Stachybotrys chartarum, but several other molds look similar. Color isn’t a reliable indicator — and DIY test kits are notoriously unreliable. If you see suspicious growth, get a professional inspection.
Do you serve cities outside Stuart?
Yes. We provide residential mold remediation across Martin, St. Lucie, and Palm Beach counties — including Palm City, Jensen Beach, Hutchinson Island, Sewall’s Point, Hobe Sound, Port St. Lucie, Tradition, Jupiter, Tequesta, Juno Beach, and Palm Beach Gardens.
